General Questions

How do residents donate clothes and shoes?

Residents can donate clothes and shoes to any of our clothing recycling bins located throughout Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Many times, your town’s recycling coordinator will have our bin locations available to share with you. In addition, some municipalities are participating in curbside pickup with Upcycle Collaborative. You can check your town’s website to see if we complete this service for your town in addtional to our donation bins.

How Does Upcycle Raise Funds?

Upcycle Collaborative raises funds for schools, animal shelters, and charities through donating a portion of our profits generated from the clothes donated by our community. Through providing a service to decrease the amount of textiles that go to our landfills, we are also able to provide financial support back to our local communities.

Where does the clothing we receive go?

Clothes that are donated to Upcycle Collaborative go to a distributor who then ships the textiles internationally where they are sorted into either clothes that can be sold in markets or clothes to be recycled into fabric. None of the clothes donated stay here in the United States to be resold in thrift stores or to be one day in the future thrown away into our landfills.

What should I know before donating?

Upcycle Collaborative is a Rhode Island based company interested in doing our part in helping Rhode Island and Massachusetts become more green. Our goal is to increase the recycling of textiles in our community in order to lower our collective environmental impact and footprint. Through collaborating with our local municipalities and communities, we provide a service that not only helps to prevent textiles going to our landfills. We provide financial support to causes that matter to our community.

Do you have a drop off locations and curb side pickup?

We provide drop off locations to many of the towns in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. For some municipalities, we now offer curbside pickup for textiles. Please check with your municipality to see if we currently provide this service. If we do not, and you would like for Upcycle Collaborative to provide curbside pickup for your town please contact us.

Recyclable Items

All of the materials are graded and sorted locally and/or regionally based on quality and condition. The top quality materials will be resold to local thrift outlets, mid grade is exported to international markets and “unusable” items are processed for raw materials.
